Plan your own trips
Maps • Tips • Local insights

Discover Sicily's most beautiful places.

Without a car and away from mass tourism.

Easy, safe, and planned by yourself.

With the right choice of our "base camp", we can achieve this goal without any problems.

The key point: There must be a good train connection to an airport. And additionally, as many places to visit as possible should be accessible by train.

The places around our base camp naturally also play an important role. Can we already discover many new things there? On foot or by bicycle?

One such place in Sicily is the small town of Santa Flavia, just outside Palermo. The old town of Santa Flavia is the perfect base camp for our trips to the most beautiful places.

How do I get there? How do I get around? How do I find a new home? Where can I find local support?

Boat trips

Trips to the sea? Don't almost all excursions in Sicily take place by the sea? That's true — with 1,000 km of coastline, it is almost unavoidable.

Here, however, we are talking about trips that actually take us out onto the sea. There are two options: either rent a boat and go by yourself, or take part in an organized boat tour.

Rent a boat

The harbour of Porticello is always an experience in itself for holidaymakers and expats. Since summer 2026, you can also rent a boat here.

The boat rental is located on the small pier in the northern part of the harbour (see photo) and also rents out stand-up paddle boards (SUPs).

No license is required for the small motorboats. However, if you would rather be "chauffeured" around, you can add a skipper.

Boat tour

Don't feel like renting a boat and having to steer it yourself? No problem - the harbour of Porticello has several providers offering boat tours.

Here, you are not only in the capable hands of an experienced captain. Your culinary needs are also taken care of on the excursion boats.

Exploring hidden gems

Are you looking for the "authentic" Sicily - beautiful places with almost no tourist influence? That is exactly what our "hidden gems" offer: small Sicilian towns away from mass tourism.

To discover them, you don't have to travel far. Our destinations are very easy to reach from Santa Flavia by bicycle or by train.

Preparing for a cycle race in Piazza Matrice, Casteldaccia.

Casteldaccia

The small Sicilian town of Casteldaccia is probably the "most inconspicuous" of our hidden gems. However, you will be surprised by how many examples of Sicily's eventful history can be discovered here.

The green countryside surrounding the town is a paradise for anyone looking for a house with a Mediterranean garden.

For our trip to Casteldaccia, a sturdy e-bike (such as the rental bike we recommend) is the ideal means of transport.

The outdoor area of a bar at the Belvedere in Altavilla Milicia.

Altavilla Milicia

The small Sicilian town of Altavilla Milicia is probably the "greenest" of our hidden gems, as its territory includes the nature reserve Pizzo Cane.

In addition, the green countryside surrounding the town is a paradise for anyone looking for a house with a Mediterranean garden.

For our trip to Altavilla Milicia, a sturdy e-bike (such as the rental bike we recommend) is the ideal means of transport.

The large marina in the small Sicilian town of San Nicola l'Arena.

San Nicola l'Arena

San Nicola l'Arena is the smallest of our gems - and yet it is less "hidden" than the first two.

The reason for this is one of the largest marinas in Sicily. In San Nicola l'Arena, it sometimes feels like there are more boats than houses.

For our trip to San Nicola l'Arena, a sturdy e-bike (such as the rental bike we recommend) is the ideal means of transport.

Panoramic view over the rooftops of Trabia's old town.

Trabia

The small Sicilian town of Trabia is probably the most "authentic" of our hidden gems. The reason for this is its wonderful historic center with a fountain steeped in history.

Our trip also takes us to one of the origins of the Europe-wide revolutions of 1848. You wouldn't expect that.

As the train station in Trabia is centrally located, the Train is the ideal means of transport for our trip.
